Denton Holme is often regarded as a "village within the city" and is situated on the western bank of the River Caldew. Today Denton Holme is mostly a residential area but in the nineteenth century and most of the twentieth century, it was Carlisle's main industrial district with many textile mills, engineering works and other factories. Many of these buildings remain in existence today giving the area lot's of character.
The main street, Denton Street, is home to many convenience stores, food outlets and a bingo hall. The local Primary school, Robert Ferguson, is located within close proximity at Holme Head.
On the boundary of Denton Holme and Caldewgate stands Dixon's chimney (at one time the tallest in the UK). This iconic structure has recently been restored and is a well known local landmark and a beacon for Denton Holme. Wherever you are in the surrounding area you can easily find Denton Holme by walking towards Dixon's Chimney.
